Advice for Beginners to Botox

Are you interested in Botox but want to research more before committing to treatment? We’re here to help you prepare for your first Botox treatment. Botox is a part of our cosmetic services and a great supplement to cosmetic dentistry treatments like teeth whitening and Invisalign in our Calgary, AB, office. Using Botox, we can help patients who want to smooth facial wrinkles and reduce headaches and pain due to TMJ disorders.

Preparing For Botox: What to Expect

FDA-approved Botox injections are a part of the cosmetic dentistry services we offer in Calgary, AB. We will review how to prepare before Botox and what to expect during and following treatment in our office:

Before Treatment

At least 3 to 5 days before Botox treatment, you should avoid:

  • Fish oil
  • Blood thinners
  • Ibuprofen
  • Alcohol
  • Retinol

Following Botox treatment, these substances can make you susceptible to bruising and swelling. Make sure you plan ahead and do not have any important events directly after your treatment; you can still experience bruising or redness a day or two after treatment. Eat a healthy breakfast and stay hydrated before your treatment.

During Treatment

Dr. Chahal will ensure that you feel comfortable during your Botox treatment. She will answer any questions you have and explain the process to you. To begin treatment, Dr. Chahal will target the treated areas of your face, placing small Botox injections to relax the muscles that create lines and wrinkles or contribute to TMJ discomfort and headaches. You will only feel small pinches during treatment, and your Botox injections will take about ten to fifteen minutes, about no time at all!

After Treatment

You cannot exercise for at least 24 hours after treatment, as it can raise your blood pressure and contribute to bruising. Avoid UV exposure; stay out of the sun and refrain from tanning. Use sunscreen when you go outside to protect your face. Additionally, do not place any pressure on your face, and avoid sleeping on your stomach. However, you can gently exercise your face and make facial expressions to help Botox penetrate your facial muscles.

If you experience redness or swelling, apply an ice pack to your face in 15-minute increments. Also, avoid blood thinners and alcohol for at least 24 hours. You will notice Botox results after one week and the full effect of treatment after two weeks; it can take longer to see results in forehead and frown lines and a shorter amount of time for crow’s feet. Botox will last six months, and Dr. Chahal will provide touch-up treatments to keep your face smooth and TMD symptoms in check.
